EIPAP hearing with the Bankers Association of Namibia
Statement by Hon. Rodney Cloete, MP, member of the Standing Committee on Economics and Public Administration
WINDHOEK, Today the Standing Committee on Economics and Public Administration heard the Bankers Association of Namibia on public-servant indebtedness and payroll deduction codes.
The Association told the committee that the root problem is an income crisis. It asked Parliament to reform deduction codes, not abolish them. It undertook to take a roadmap on centralising credit and deduction data to its members. No date was attached to that roadmap.
From the panel I pressed the banks on what they will do to fix a system that lets many lenders and many deductions hit one salary, not only teach the borrower. Teaching matters. It is not enough on its own.
Public servants need a system that sees every deduction on the payslip before the next loan is approved. Soft roadmaps without dates leave the risk on the worker.
I will continue this work in the committee report.
Namibia is all we have
Namibia is not for sale
We must and can save it!
